NUON × Link Digital. Energy Transition.
Since the founding of NUON, we have been supporting the digital transformation of the German energy transition by advising the digitalization unit of the largest infrastructure project in Germany. Now, in the second half of 2024, the independent digital service provider LINK digital GmbH has been established.

Enormous planning, documentation and administrative efforts are required to realize a key infrastructure project such as the ‘SuedLink’ north-south direct current line.
Legal requirements as well as nature conservation requirements must be fulfilled. Without a corresponding IT and service portfolio, such a project is virtually impossible these days. The SuedLink digital business unit was the central unit for SuedLink, which represents the digital backbone for grid expansion projects in Germany thanks to its own product portfolio combined with excellent industry expertise.
After establishing the broad-based IT portfolio that meets the requirements of grid expansion projects, the idea was realized to also make it available to the numerous other grid expansion projects (e.g. SuedOstLink, SuedWestLink) to be carried out as part of the energy transition.
NUON’s consulting services focused on founding the independent LINK digital GmbH and establishing the organisation's readiness for multi-project capability. In this context, the orchestration of the entire project across the equal shareholders TransnetBW GmbH, TenneT TSO GmbH and 50Hertz Transmission GmbH was of great importance. The intensive, collaborative exchange between all parties involved to clarify issues beyond the administrative necessities will be finalized by the start of operational activities in November 2024.

This new GmbH then had to be put on a multi-project capable footing, which led to many procedural and organizational changes that had to be thought through, tested and finally implemented.

The (re)positioning and organization of LINK digital now makes it possible not only to implement and support the IT requirements of SuedLink, the largest infrastructure project of the energy transition, but also to provide services to the largest other projects to the same extent, customer proximity and quality — in compliance with all legal requirements.
There are immense benefits for all of these projects. The commencement of operations by LINK digital therefore has a direct impact on the progress of the German energy transition and, as a result, on the continued competitiveness of Germany as a business location.
We at NUON are not only grateful for the opportunity to actively contribute to the largest infrastructure project of the German energy transition, but also to help shape the German energy transition.
The establishment of LINK digital benefits not only the major projects, but potentially every energy project in Germany. In addition, this project sets a benchmark for us in terms of collaboration - be it with the customer, with colleagues from other consulting firms or with the three transmission system operators TransnetBW GmbH, TenneT TSO GmbH and 50Hertz Transmission GmbH.
